About Brussels City Centre

Brussels City CentreBrussels is an incredible city with a city centre that is packed with fun and interesting things to do.

One of the most popular attractions in the Brussels City Centre is Grande-Place, also called Gote Markt. Grande-Place is widely accepted to be the most incredible and gorgeous medieval squares in all of Europe. It is the central square of the city and surrounded with a variety of guildhalls, the town hall, and a bread house. It is such an interesting tourist location that it has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Grande-Place came about in the 10th century, when the Duke of Lower Lorraine, Charles, built a fort on the island of Saint-Géry. This is the place where the Senne River becomes navigable. This fort eventually became Brussels. In the twelfth century, the big open marketplace was made out of a dried-out dilapidated marsh area that sat near that old fort and was situated in the middle of the sandbanks. This market place became known as Nedermerckt, the Lower Market.

Brussels is an interesting place to visit.
